William A. Wallace - Industry Leader in the Field of Sustainable Development

This month’s installment of Insights, the Industry Leaders Council’s podcast series, features William A. “Bill” Wallace, an industry leader in the field of sustainable development with more than 40 years of experience, including 30 years in the field of environmental engineering and management.

Bill provides consulting services in emerging trends and issues analysis, strategic planning and the development of profitable new ventures. He serves on several national and international professional society committees focused on sustainability, leading the preparation of policies and guidance. Additionally, Bill is currently on the Task Committee for Sustainable Design. He also assists public and private organizations apply sustainability principles to their operations. His book “Becoming Part of the Solution: The Engineer’s Guide to Sustainable Development” has been called a best seller by the American Council of Engineering Companies.

In this edition of Insights, Bill discusses some of his career experiences, both at CH2MHill and from when he started his own business. He will also talk about his work with ASCE’s sustainability committee, and the initiatives the society is conducting.

Bill has been a keynote speaker at professional society and trade association meetings and universities. His engagements included invited keynote presentations on sustainable engineering to ASCE’s Board of Direction, and for the Carnegie Mellon University Spring 2009 Distinguished Lecture Series. He is also an adjunct Instructor for the University of Florida’s Electronic Delivery of Graduate Engineering (EDGE) program, teaching Green Engineering Design and Sustainability, a gateway course leading to a sustainable engineering certificate.

Bill chairs International Federation of Consulting Engineers’ (FIDIC ‘s) Sustainable Development Committee and is the primary writer of FIDIC’s Project Sustainability Management Guidelines. Bill is also the immediate past president and member of the governing board of Engineers Without Borders–USA (EWB-USA).

Before setting up his own consulting firm, Bill spent 21 years at CH2M HILL holding various senior management positions including a three-year term on the board of directors. Bill was CH2M HILL’s liaison delegate to the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, an international organization of more than 190 multinational companies that share a commitment to sustainability.

Bill received a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from Clarkson University and serves on the university’s Engineering Advisory Council. He received an M.S. in management from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and completed the Harvard Business School Advanced Management Program.
